Encouraging
So you guys are awesome. Your reassurance on the matter of Yard (and our general neglect of) were tremendously helpful. The gentleman from the company who did our patio three years ago came out. He was not judgmental. He did not administer some sort of horticultural pop quiz. He did not chastise me for my amazing laziness. He said yes, we can make it simpler. He said yes, we can refrain from murdering your tree. He said yes, we can start next week. So yeah, that was easy. The nice men will come and make it less awful. He did [...]
Bad at Yard
We are bad at yard. Amazingly astonishingly alarmingly bad at yard. This is especially embarrassing since our lot is tiny. Like 35 feet across, 100 feet deep type tiny (and that's total...the house plops down in the middle and eats up most of that space, the driveway and garage get a chunk too). And to make matters worse, our across the street neighbor is freaky good at yard. It makes us look extra bad. We used to at least have the best of intentions. We talked about planting blueberries and thought about flowers. Yeah. Not our skill. All plans ended [...]
Kittens are Punks, Part I
I preface this by saying first, it's my own damn fault. Do keep that in mind as we go along. But, with that in the back of your mind, I posit that kittens are punks. The other day, I was doing something in the basement. I have no idea what at this point. Laundry is most likely, but I don't actually think that was it. Whatever it was, I happened to remember that I had some boxes of easter eggs down there. Now if you know me, this is really rather surprising. I don't celebrate easter. I don't decorate for [...]
Helper Cat
The Rearranging Of The Bookcases is something of a yearly ritual around these parts. The goal this time was to get rid of a few of the less necessary books (book accumulation is the family curse, and if I don't set strict limits I'll be buried) and so make a bit of room. I packed up a box to send to amazon's trade in service (which is rather nifty, if you don't know about it already it's worth a look) and took another box to Half Price Books. All of this noble purging freed up enough space that I could [...]
Warm and Spiky
Two bits of good news! First, the nice man from the gas company's repair service showed up bright and early Monday morning. He looked at our furnace (an admittedly elderly piece of machinery), took a panel off, wiggled a few wires, pushed a button, and boom...heat. I felt rather like an ass for not knowing to do this myself. But I was a warm ass, so I didn't care for long. And I had remembered that we had the furnace repair program and called them instead of calling the regular repair company (who charge $80 to ring the doorbell and [...]
Less Than Stellar
You know what is not a fun way to begin your morning? With the realization that your furnace is no longer blowing warm air...is instead blowing icy cold air. This is absolutely not good. It significantly alters your plans for the day. I am displeased.
Not Productive
This weekend was not productive. I did not clean my house. I did not do my laundry. I did not proof the book. I did not write up a new pattern. I didn't even knit. I ate tasty food. I read books (fiction books...not scholarly books...an unheard of luxury). I may have even had a tiny little nap. And I played games. Lots and lots of games. Douglas approved and was happy to help. He seemed to prefer this one, as the box makes an excellent kitten nest. But fear not, there was quite a lot of actual productive work [...]
Porch Knitting
Is it wrong that I started something last night that will be simple enough to knit on the porch tonight as we hand out candy (and play-doh...really...it's a huge hit)? Is anyone else knitting while they hand out candy? Anybody got a costume planned? I must admit I don't dress up. But I DO sit on the porch and drink warm things and eat candy while judging the local costumes.
Cheating
I have a complicated relationship with my furnace. I deeply resent turning it on every year. It's not even that it's all that expensive. It's just I feel that I should be tougher than that. I shouldn't walk around whining that my fingers are frozen stiff when it's 55 in here. That's a perfectly lovely temperature and I should enjoy it. But I find if I'm sitting still and reading or writing, I really can't abide 55, even if I'm bundled up in all sorts of woolly layers. And the next few days are going to see a lot of [...]
