Tiny Nonsense

Community Supported Memberships

So, as part of the patreon reorganization, I'm switching from Community Supported Patterns (which we did from September of 2022 through the end of 2025) to Community Supported Patreon Memberships. TL;DR version right up top: I know that knitting patterns and sweet little surprises in the mail don't fit in everyone's budget right now, but I also know that sometimes you just really need a little treat, even if it's not in the budget. So I'm going to do a handful of Community Supported Memberships to the Notable Nonsense tier every month so we can put some good cheer in [...]

Will this help?

Seems like y'all love these almost as much as I do! They're gauge cards, you lay them on your knitting, scan down the rows until you find the one where you've got one stitch per square, then read the label on that row to get your gauge. Now, is this as accurate as knitting a 6 inch square, washing it, blocking it, and carefully measuring your exact gauge over several different four inch stretches of fabric? Nope! But are most of you going to do all of that? Also very much nope. Does setting this on your fabric get you [...]

Gauge Cards!

So, remember those gauge cards? The ones that sold out in a couple days back in the fall? The ones everyone wanted me to get more of? Yeah, I found a way to do that! I've added a spiffy new tier to patreon for folks who want to get things in the mail. The first shipment will be a pair of these nifty little gauge cards. Patreon is the only way to get them, there are a limited number of spots (I told existing patreon folks about them first so they got first dibs, and as of this writing, they're [...]

Monthly Reminder

Hey, so fascism is inherently gendered! Which I know, is going to make some folks absolutely roll their eyes and wander off muttering about the perils of a liberal education, a complaint rarely uttered by anyone who actually had one (though hopefully not too many of the folks here because I think we've scared most of that bunch away already). But I'm guessing there are actually quite a lot of you that are going to go 'huh...I hadn't thought about it that way, tell me more' (because y'all are an absolutely smashing bunch of humans and always interested in learning [...]

Not Today

I'm shutting things down for the general strike on Friday (more info on the strike here). Except it's a manual process, not something I can automate for a specific time, I am for sure not staying up past my bedtime tonight nor setting an alarm to get up in the middle of the night to turn them back on Saturday morning. So really stuff will be down from now till when I have enough tea in me Saturday morning to be trusted around a computer. I'm putting this here so hopefully folks will see it if they're looking for something [...]

Not the knitting police

Not the knitting police, but I sure do have opinions. The one I knit with the wonky yarn weighs 5% more than the one I knit with the regular yarn. Yes, some of the unevenness will block out… But if you're using 5% more yarn for the same number and arrangement of stitches, those two pieces of fabric simply are going to be substantially different even after you block them. If you don't wanna straighten your yarn out before you use it again, cool, I can't make you. But I can strongly recommend that you do.

Yarn Ramen

Yes to snack ramen, no to yarn ramen. If yarn sits in fabric for a while, it will hold the shape of the stitches. Soak it and let it dry to get it back to its original state before you knit with it or else your fabric will be wonky and your gauge will be substantially looser. If it's still wonky after the first time, it means you didn't soak it long enough. Do it again. These two loops of yarn were wound around the same thing (so they're the same size). Look how much bigger the relaxed one is...and [...]

Two Things

One, I'm reclaiming the yarn from this swatch (look here if you want to watch me pull it out...) which means unraveling it, putting it water until it's absolutely soaked all the way through, then hanging it to dry. If all the kinks don't come out, you didn't soak it long enough, do it again. (I don't like to put a weight on it while it dries because I feel like that stretches it out and I don't want it being stretched out more than I want it being kinked up, so I just do it twice if the first [...]

What’s next?

As promised, more details on the new patreon tiers! TL;DR version right up top: I'm streamlining my patreon tiers, but you don't need to change anything if you don't want to! If you do nothing, you'll keep (or lower) your current prices and automatically get the stuff that comes with the new version of your tier. But just in case you've been thinking of switching, if you switch to the Rampant Nonsense tier before the price goes up, you'll keep the current price (but get the extra patterns that come with the new version of the tier) for as long [...]
