Squeaking in under the deadline
See, I told you we'd get through this in time! The lovely thing about thick fluffy hats is that they knit up delightfully quickly. Oh and just for the record (because in my mad dash to talk about two hats in a week I think I neglected to mention it), the yarns on this one are Martin's Lab's Tyrell DK and Silky Mohair, both in the color Seashells. I held them double and they played absolutely beautifully together. Holding a strand of mohair along with another yarn just makes the whole thing glow (and makes whatever you're knitting extra cozy. [...]
Form an orderly line
We're taking turns, ok? Yesterday was the purple fluffy bit of business. Today it's swirly turquoise all the way. I don't think I told you anything about the yarn. It's by Katia, and I think it's called Concept, though maybe it's Concept Cotton-Merino (it's a little hard to tell from the label what the name actually is). Whatever it's called it's lovely. There's a sort of icord tube in the middle, knit out the cotton thread. And then fluffy tufts of merino are sort of caught in the tube to make it all soft and puffy. I expect it will [...]
I didn’t forget
Don't worry, the purple hat is still out there being all purple and hat like. This is basically the opposite day version of Incidence. It's thick yarn instead of tiny yarn. It's got a massive deep brim instead of no brim at all. And it's firmly in the 'yeah, but what if I don't want to do brioche camp'. Because really...most anything you can do in brioche, you can do in ribbing too. No really...brioche is just fanc-ified 1x1 ribbing. So you can pretty much always strip the fancy bits back and have something nifty left behind. And that's what I'm [...]
So about this big yarn thing…
I may have to get a whole new stash. A new stash composed entirely of giant poufy yarns that knit up in ten minutes flat. Because this is the second hat I tore through in less than 24 hours from cast on to bind off. And while I can't recommend doing that (seriously, it makes my elbow hurt, it is not a good idea), it is rather satisfying. And yes, yes the purple hat is what I should be showing you. It will come tomorrow. For today, I just need to pet this.
Miles and miles and miles
I love a deep brim. Well wait. I love wearing a deep brim. It's cozy, it looks adorable (if I do say so myself), and it lets you fine tune the height of the hat if you're having a particularly poufy hair day (look, I have rather willful hair, it's best to plan around it). Tragically, wearing a deep brim does mean you must first knit a deep brim. I'm less enamored of that bit. But by jove I have knit enough hats with skimpy brims to know better. I want a full five inches of brim at a minimum [...]
Easily distractable
I feel like I *should* be able to show you things in a perfect, logical, reasonable order. I should knit stuff, take lots of pictures as I go, edit them and write about them, then save them up to show you in the week or two leading up to the debut of the pattern for whatever it was I was knitting. Like that doesn't sound like too much to ask for. But somehow, no. I cannot quite manage that level of organization. So instead of getting more of the lovely hat that will come out later this month (that light purple one from the [...]
Opposite day
After the fluffy wisp of nothing of the laceweight hat, I think I need something a bit more substantial for the next project. This should do nicely. Even if we are starting things off by having to do a little repair. I always argue with myself about whether one tiny stitch left untwisted is really worth fixing...but it is. Because if I don't, I'll stare at it ever time I reach for the hat...and that's not a fair thing to do to an innocent bit of knitting. Especially when fixing it is so easy. It's pretty much always worth doing. [...]
But first…
Ahem. But before the shenanigans with the yarn remnants can get fully underway, I need to mess up this perfectly good silk ribbon (as always, amazon links are affiliate links). This is how it looked when I got it. The light and dark yellow ones (top and left) are fine. The white and orange ones (bottom and right) are too...stark. They won't look right with that pile of yarn from yesterday. So I reeled them off on my swift, tied up the resulting hanks of yarn, and abused them. I left them to soak in a truly revolting mix of tea (tea leaves left [...]
It won’t be hot forever
It's August. Which somehow catches me by surprise every year. And yes, I know we will still have lots of hot days. But it's also now just barely possible to remember that cooler nights are coming. That there may be a time, in the not too distant future, where I am chilly and want a jacket. So perhaps it's no surprise that this is what I found myself grabbing as I sorted through the scraps bin. Because I have a plan. And I will admit up front that it is the most pumpkin spice flavored, disgustingly cute, pile of absolute [...]
