Tiny Nonsense

Incidence

I mean I can't say I wasn't warned...pretty much everyone told me that once I gave in and tried it, I was going to fall hard for brioche.  And well...they were all right.  Incidence is my second brioche project, I love it more than any reasonable person should, and it's 10% off on ravelry with the code TOLD YOU SO. Now, someone is reading this and thinking 'yup, it's pretty, but I don't know how to do brioche.'  To which I have to say yeah, neither did I.  You can go from 'I've never knit brioche' to 'I have the skills [...]

Smitten

Aaaaand here's the rest of it.  As always, I like to clip it up and try it on to check the height. I feel like brioche grows just a tiny bit more than most knit fabrics, so I'll err on the side of ever so slightly shorter if I have to, but I also like my hats awfully tall, so not too short (yeah, I know, not super helpful, sorry about that, I think you just really have to try it on and see what you like best). And the decreases are, of course, adorable. As is the finished hat! [...]

Overcome

I was overcome earlier this week.  Some yarn winked at me.  I found myself unable to resist.  And before I knew it, there was a whole new hat in the world. This might well be my personal record holder for speed knitting. I cast on Monday night and cast off Tuesday night.  It was less than 24 hours from cast on to bind off (I mean, it took it a bit longer than that to dry after I blocked it...but I'm totally saying drying time doesn't count).  This is what happens when you're home alone, have a shiny new audio [...]

And done!

Done!  Well...the sort of done that means done knitting and done weaving in the ends, but not quite blocked yet. But certainly done enough to see it's adorable. And the whole thing weighs practically nothing.  Like less than an ounce.  Like you could put it in an envelope and mail it with a single stamp.  I don't know why this amuses me, but it does.

Speedy

Once you've got the hat as tall as it needs to be, you get to do the decreases.  And on a hat like this, they just fly.  The first round of decreases knocks the stitch count down by half. The second cuts the stitch count in half again. This is basically the point where the only thing slowing you down is how you keep flipping the hat inside out or popping it on a head form to admire it. Because really, there's only a handful of stitches left to do! Pattern will be out Tuesday August 6, so you don't [...]

Try on

I've totally mentioned this before, but every time I do someone says 'holy crap why didn't I know that sooner,' so I'm doing it again.  If you have a hat with fast decreases (the kind that sort of bunch the fabric up on the top of your head), it can be hard to know how tall the hat needs to be before you can start the decreases. The thing that works for me every time is to put the stitches on two long needles and try the hat on.  Looks ridiculous, but if it's long enough like this, it will [...]

Catch up

Ok, I need to catch you up.  Both on me (that whole 'take some time off' idea was a total failure...I didn't take any time off at all...but I did get a heck of a lot done), and on the fluffy hat.  For the hat has been progressing rather nicely. And...as with a lot of brioche projects, it turns out it's delightfully reversible. I can't quite decide which side I like more.  Which is fine, because I really don't have to.  I can just pull it out of my pocket and wear it however it happens to be facing that [...]

Summer School – Blocking – Scintillation

I’m taking a bit of time off this month, but I wanted to make sure you had something to do while I’m napping (or, more likely, sweeping out the garage, getting drywall dust  out of my cabinets, or planning next year’s projects…but napping sounds better). On Mondays, I’ll introduce a topic or skill and provide a bunch of links and resources to help you learn more. Later in the week, I’ll show off a few favorite patterns so you can do some homework.  The featured patterns will be on sale for one day each, so come back each weekday to [...]
