Dive in
Perhaps you remember the other day? When I was very very very mean and told you that there was a decent chance that some of the reason you 'could never do that' was because you kept telling yourself you can't? Right...so let's talk about that some more. Earlier this year, when our house was invaded by absolutely lovely, skilled, kind people doing extremely noisy, dusty, disruptive things to deal with the aftermath of the burst pipe, I decided I'd deal with the chaos by teaching myself two color brioche. Because that's a reasonable way to cope. So I did! I [...]
Probably going to want two
Mitt the first is done! And mitt the second is underway. This is my second time doing this long color progression thing on mitts (first was Infer), and I suspect it won't be the last. There's a tiny part of my brain that says but...but...but...it's not absolutely 100% perfectly symmetric. But it's shouted down by the part of my brain going oooooooh, pretty color! Various, the matching hat, is out now, and the mitts will follow mid month (I pretty much always have something out the first and third Tuesdays of the month). Long color change yarns versus thumbs
So we talked about this once before. When you have a long color change yarn, and you're knitting a mitt with a thumb, you have to make a little decision there in the middle. Normally, you (or at least I...) make a mitt by knitting a tube (for your wrist), making it a bit bigger (to make space for the base of your thumb), knitting a bigger tube for a bit (to get up to where your thumb and hand split), setting aside some stitches (they'll turn into the thumb later), knitting some more of the original size tube (for [...]
Various (plus giveaway)
Various is out, it's 10% off with the code STARBURST, and I'm not even going to pretend I don't love it to bits. If you've been here a while, you know I'm not inclined to proper colorwork. I can do it. I have done it. But it's not my happy place. But I don't want to miss out on all the fun of combining yarns. So instead, I find ways to play with two yarns, but only use one per row (because that makes it feel less like I'm going to be trapped in a giant spiderweb of yarn). And [...]
Edgy
So let's talk edges. A few of the folks testing this mentioned they like ribbed brims better than rolled brims. And while I am a sucker for a good rolled brim (or maybe it's just that my eyes start to cross if I have to knit too much ribbing...), I can totally see the appeal (in fact, some of my early swatches with this stitch had a ribbed start). So...why not have an option for either! This is the rib I liked best (in part because it will look great folded up and will work well on the matching mitts too), and I'll [...]
In which I try to be careful and reasonable, but will probably mess it up somehow
There's another one of those big, swirly (slightly messy) conversations happening over on instagram, this time on pattern prices and designer earnings. And those are good things to talk about! But the conversation is happening largely in instagram stories. And that's great if it works for you and how you like to share or consume information...but wow am I not good at following conversations there. And wow do I have a lot to say about pattern pricing and designer earnings. So I'm going to talk about it here. So, as far as I can tell (imagine a big asterisk here [...]
Show off
Ok, I'm not even going to manage to feign a becoming level of modesty on this one. Because this one is just unspeakably nifty. Look at that. That's just flat out delightful. And it's weirdly fun to knit too! And no...no you probably don't spend much time staring at the underside of your own thumbs. But maybe that's about to change!
Out of character
I've been on a yarn buying binge lately. Normally I'm shockingly circumspect in what I buy (no really...don't make that face...it's true...I promise). But some combination of spring (finally finally spring) and stress (we're entering week four of renovations on the house after the burst water pipe back in November...my house has been in various stages of disruption for five solid months and I am Really Quite Done With That Thanks), or the new found brioche obsession has me buying all the things. These are two pairs I picked up last week while out hiding from the demolition zone at my house. [...]
All better
Just a few more rows... And then a little taper at the top (mostly because picking up a whole row of stitches straight is a pain, so I decided I'd just decrease it away and make a curve)... And it's done! Oh, and then at the end I noticed the cable coming off the side was a little frayed, so I took my tail and duplicate stitched over it to be extra safe. Again, totally not invisible, not subtle, but it will keep the sweater in circulation for a nice long time. I'm trying to decide if I want to [...]
