Tiny Nonsense

I mean I suppose technically it’s more ribbing…

So now we're at the bit where I more or less...well...have to knit ribbing again.  And I'm not quite sure why an inch of ribbing at the bottom, before the fun bits, feels like endless purgatory, but three inches of ribbing at the top feels like zipping towards the finish.  But somehow it does. So I'm not actually minding tooooooo much.  Though if we're being honest, it's still not my favorite bit. Perhaps my uncharacteristic stoicism is because it means it's just about time to do the crown.  And I have a suspicion brioche crowns are their own special kind [...]

Sundry

You knew it was coming!  Sundry is out today on ravelry, and it's 10% off with the code STRIPES (or you can get Various and Sundry together for a special discount too, details of that on each pattern's ravelry page). So all the stuff I said about the hat?  The stuff about how I don't like proper colorwork (because it, through no fault of its own, makes me feel clumsy and like I have extra thumbs)?  But how I do like colors?  And how damn it all I'm not letting my clumsiness keep me away from the color...I'll just do [...]

Clicking along

Yup, I'm smitten. I mean I'll fully admit that I'm easily smitten.  It's part of the reason I can do this job, I'm easily infatuated with whatever is on my needles at the moment. But this is really rather delightful!   [pextestim pex_attr_set="looking-for-this-pattern" pex_attr_autoplay="false"][/pextestim]

Oops

Yeah, so I got some yarn.  I told you I've been stress buying yarn. I was down in Portland last month and stopped into KnitWit and found three amazing (and new-to-me) yarns that had to follow me home. That purple bit of lovely on the left is Knerd String's DK Weight Superwash Merino in the color Alpine Daisy. The glowing delight in the middle is Little Fox Yarn's Bōsa in Lakehouse. And the speckled delight on the right is Magpie Fibers' Swanky Sock in Lite Brite. And discoveries like these are one of the many reasons yarn shops are magic [...]

The fun bits

The ribbing is never my favorite bit.  In fact, the ribbing is the bit I sternly make myself do because I know I will like wearing the finished thing better as a result.  But really...my heart is in it for the swirly middle bits. Though to be fair, I was rather pleased with myself for being comfy enough with brioche to reach the 'yup, ready to be done with the ribbing' stage right on schedule.  I'm pretty sure you can't be both bored and scared at the same time, so if I got to bored, then I'm well past scared, [...]

Once more with feeling

I mean...I fear there's not that much to say... Yup, still pretty.  Still madly in love with that thumb. Yup, still digging the gradients (Freia Handpaint's Sport Ombre in the color Flare...nifty nifty NIFTY stuff). Still all on track to have this show up on ravelry on the 21st!  And if you want to start on the hat now, that's already out (and don't worry...ravelry lets me do cool things with the set where if you've already bought the hat, and then want the mitts down the line, whatever you spent on the mitts will be counted toward the price [...]

Dive in

Perhaps you remember the other day? When I was very very very mean and told you that there was a decent chance that some of the reason you 'could never do that' was because you kept telling yourself you can't?  Right...so let's talk about that some more. Earlier this year, when our house was invaded by absolutely lovely, skilled, kind people doing extremely noisy, dusty, disruptive things to deal with the aftermath of the burst pipe, I decided I'd deal with the chaos by teaching myself two color brioche.  Because that's a reasonable way to cope. So I did!  I [...]

Probably going to want two

Mitt the first is done! And mitt the second is underway. This is my second time doing this long color progression thing on mitts (first was Infer), and I suspect it won't be the last. There's a tiny part of my brain that says but...but...but...it's not absolutely 100% perfectly symmetric.  But it's shouted down by the part of my brain going oooooooh, pretty color! Various, the matching hat, is out now, and the mitts will follow mid month (I pretty much always have something out the first and third Tuesdays of the month).   [pextestim pex_attr_set="looking-for-this-pattern" pex_attr_autoplay="false"][/pextestim]

Long color change yarns versus thumbs

So we talked about this once before.  When you have a long color change yarn, and you're knitting a mitt with a thumb, you have to make a little decision there in the middle. Normally, you (or at least I...) make a mitt by knitting a tube (for your wrist), making it a bit bigger (to make space for the base of your thumb), knitting a bigger tube for a bit (to get up to where your thumb and hand split), setting aside some stitches (they'll turn into the thumb later), knitting some more of the original size tube (for [...]
