Graupel (plus giveaway)
You know how the right yarn and the right stitches can come together to make something that's niftier than it has any right to be? That's totally what happens with Graupel, and I'm so excited to have them back out! The leg has a little sample of everything (a bit of cabling, a bit of lace, and a bit of ribbing), all in a four row repeat. Yet somehow, it manages to feel calm, not busy. Then when you get down to the foot, stitches come swooping in from the side to wrap your foot in soothing stockinette. Now of [...]
Kinked
Once I decided that the initial incarnation of the gray socks had to give way to a new version, the next step was to free the yarn. Now this is actually surprisingly hard for me. I loathe ripping. I always feel like I'm throwing away all that time I spent knitting. But in this case, there was absolutely no way I was ever going to use (or even finish) the socks, and the yarn was too pretty to waste. So out came the darning needle and the swift. I picked out my ends (why on earth am I so thorough [...]
Shapely
So the cuff is done. It is adorable (and comfy, and soft, and warm, and all the other things you'd want a cuff to be). But it is also weirdly hard to photograph (that it is a bit damp doesn't help, but sunset comes early these days, and if I waited for it to dry it would be dark, so I'll take what I can get). Eduardo helps give a sense of the proportions of the thing, but his wrist is rather wider in comparison to his hand than is mine, so things look a bit elongated. The actual proportions [...]
Unearthed
A recent toss of the secondary knitting basket (don't look at me like that, I know some of you have them, too) revealed by far my oldest WIP. As far as I can tell, I put that down some time in the summer of 2011 and haven't touched it since. For those keeping score at home, that's one whole sock and pretty much the whole leg of another sock. That should, in theory, be the fastest path from me to a shiny new pair of socks. Alas, in this case, the theory doesn't quite hold true. The first sock truly [...]
Daunting
Respectable adults do not whine. Respectable adults certainly do not wine about anything so lovely as a giant pile of knitting ready for blocking. Respectable adults would not dream of doing any such thing, they wouldn't even know how to start if you asked them to. I, on the other hand, lacking something in both the adulthood and the respectability departments, may have looked at this pile (and that's not all of them, there are four more on the way) and whined quite a bit. But then the lovely folks at Inspinknity stepped in to save the day with their [...]
Scalloped
Well then, this is going to be something rather special, isn't it? I'm not sure what it says about me, but I find scalloped edges on knitting almost unbearably entertaining. The only thing that reassures me is that I've heard from quite a few of you that you like them, too! And mix in a scalloped edge and some Devon by Black Bunny Fibers, and you're pretty much going to have magic. I can't really be expected to resist.
Fall with SweetGeorgia (review and giveaway)
I have a long history of loving SweetGeorgia's yarns. I used them way back in my very first book and have been happily playing with them ever since (oh and there just might be a pattern in one of their yarns in the new book due out next month). I love it when yarn companies collaborate with designers, so when I heard they were releasing a collection this fall, I was totally excited! The collection is called Fall with SweetGeorgia (that 'volume 1' part there makes me hope there are more things planned), and it's delightful. It's a lovely mix [...]
Flare
I have a long-standing, deeply-held, and unabashed fondness for flared cuffs. They're the piece of knitting I wear most often (gloves and hats feel like outer wear, whereas my cuffs I can totally wear in my drafty house without feeling like a weirdo who needs to get new windows). They leave your fingers free for typing or knitting or cooking or whatever else it is you need to be getting on with, but somehow do actually manage to keep you warmer. They take surprisingly little time to knit. And they're just downright adorable. Or they are, after they're finished and [...]
Calcareous (plus giveaway)
We're totally on a roll. I told you I had a lovely stack of early patterns to bring back, and today's is Calcareous! These sort of hit that sweet spot between cabling and ribbing. The cables keep the ribbing from getting boring (because I can't be the only one who would go mad with boredom before I reached the end of a pair of plain ribbed socks). And the ribbing keeps the cables behaving nicely and makes sure the socks fit beautifully. And there's something rather tidy going on with the gusset there too. See how the decreases are snugged [...]
