Tiny Nonsense

Tell Me Again

No, really.  Tell me again how gray is super boring and how I'm going to hate having an entire book of gray projects and how everyone else will hate it too.  Because maybe this time I'll believe you. Or maybe I won't.  Because I swear I love every single one of these (and that's before they've been blocked and primped and swirled into place and carefully photographed).  And I'm pretty sure you guys will too. That's the first five projects from the second Curl book.  Projects six, seven, and eight are out with intrepid sample knitters as I type, with [...]

Fig Syrup

The grocery store had fresh figs.  The grocery store very rarely has fresh figs (they seem to have a shelf life of about 47 seconds, so I understand), so I felt I had to take advantage.  Of course, there is a limit to how many you can just eat out of the bag, but you really can't let the others go to waste.  So I made fig syrup.  Fig, rosemary, pepper simple syrup to be precise. I used two figs, four biggish sprigs of fresh rosemary, and two tablespoons of peppercorns, plus one mason jar of white sugar and the [...]

Slant (plus giveaway)

Ready for an oldie?  Slant were one of the very first sock patterns I ever put out (looks like my third one if I'm counting correctly).  They've been on hiatus while the pattern was totally revamped (new photos, new charts, new layout, loads more sizes), and now they're ready for their comeback! I loved these when I first made them (they're still in heavy rotation in my sock basket), and I love them now.  The rib ensures they'll fit beautifully.  The pattern is mirrored (because when you have lines like that you just have to do it that way, there's [...]

We Regret to Inform You

We regret to inform you that the blog has been canceled for the day due to emergency kitten cuteness.  I had a choice.  I could either do something productive and diligent and businesslike.  Or I could entertain this kitten.  The kitten won.  I'm sure you understand.

Psst

Slant, one of my very earliest patterns, is coming back out Tuesday.  If you want an email (and a coupon) when it does, be sure you're on the mailing list. Now go do something restful and indulgent this weekend, I'm pretty sure we've all earned it!

Ribbed

I have a fondness for ribbing.  I mean lace is lovely, and cables are undeniably satisfying.  But ribbing is just so tidy.  I can't help but love it.  Add in 'gray' and 'soft' and 'curly' and I'm all the more smitten. And yes, for those of you counting at home, this is the fourth of the curls in the sequel.  I'm loving how this book is coming together.  I swear it's going to be the most soothing set of projects in the whole wide world.  Every time I look at the pile of finished pieces I'm delighted I went with [...]

Motto

I have an unfortunate tendency.  Well, I likely have more than one, but today I want to talk about one in particular.  If I don't pay close attention, I will get absolutely paralyzed.  I will tell myself 'you don't know everything you could possibly know about a topic, therefore you may not do anything involving that topic.'  Or better yet 'you do not know every single step necessary to finish that project, so it's best not to start at all.' This attitude makes it astonishingly easy to get absolutely nothing done.  You can always tell yourself that you're not ready, [...]

Not Dead

Do you remember that feeling you'd get in school right before you handed in a big paper?  The absolute conviction you left something out, or put two pages in the wrong order, or that some really important word doesn't mean quite what you think it does and you used it wrong throughout the entire project?  That feeling of creeping dread that overwhelmed you at four in the morning the day the project was due? Yeah.  That feeling doesn't go away.  Some time in the next 24 hours or so, I send the book files off to the printer, and I [...]

Totally A Sock

I've checked, this is totally a sock.  It has all of the sock parts you need to officially declare it a sock.  Even non-knitters could successfully identify it. The only question is how long will it take me to do the second one.  We all know it will be a while.  Especially since I have sort of a neat idea for a few variations on a theme for this one. I'm not sure if I'll end up making a regular pair, a fraternal pair, or if I'll enlist the help of a favorite yarn company to actually get a few [...]
