Ran Away, Part 3

When last I left you, The Boy had spotted the Schaefer outlet sign, informed me of this discovery, and graciously redirected the car.  We pulled up and saw the yarn waving at us through the open doorway.  Someone was out front working in the garden.  I asked if we could go in, and stepped inside. Should you ever be in this part of the world, I highly recommend you find a way to do the same. The room is tiny, but it's packed floor to ceiling with lovely yarn.  One of my favorite things about Schaefer is the wide array [...]

Ran Away, Part 2

You know those days where everything just seems to line up and work?  Lots of stuff gets done without any feeling of being rushed or frantic?  Yeah, somehow we managed to have a whole weekend like that.  I'll do the abbreviated version here.  (Why? Because it's my website and I totally use it for shameless reminders of where I went when and oh what was that cool restaurant and when did we visit those folks and a whole list of other things.  That's why.  I totally encourage you to go find a more interesting corner of the internet today if [...]

Ran Away

Friday afternoon we set kittens up to be self sufficient for a day or two, tossed a change of clothes in a bag, flung some things in the car, and ran away.  Our favorite band, Jukebox The Ghost, was playing in Ithaca.  We were unable to resist.  If you find them in a town near you, you shouldn't resist either. There's lots of yarny stuff to report too, but it will have to wait till later in the week.  But don't worry, it's coming.  I just have to see if I can get my camera to behave long enough to [...]

Beginnings

One of the folks I had the pleasure of meeting at TNNA this June was Alisha of Alisha Goes Around.  I'd first heard about Alisha after 2011's TNNA (and all the things I heard were ever so nice).  I very much wanted to check out her yarn for myself.  Alas, shortly after that TNNA, Alisha's life got complicated, and her yarn got hard to find. But now...now she's back.  She's back, and she was nice enough to share some of her yarn with me when we met.  The yarn, Tracks (of Bison) Fingering in Briton, has been floating in the [...]

So There’s This Thing I Wanna Try…

You know what happens when you (sort of accidentally) start a business and then run it by yourself?  You find yourself running a business by yourself.  That can be just the tiniest bit overwhelming.  It's hard to know when you're done for the day, and that gets a bit challenging from time to time.  So I'm going to try something.  This could be radical, but I think it has good potential.  I'm going to try not checking email or ravelry after dinner or before breakfast.  I may even consider not being around as much on the weekends.  I know, amazing [...]

Step 1, Show Off the Knitting

I'm off to hang out with the Northcoast Knitting Guild tonight at 7.  Now, if I let myself think about this, it would make me nervous.  It's not that I mind standing up and talking in front of people.  That's actually totally ok.  It's that I don't really think I have anything all that interesting to say.  So I've sweet talked them into not doing an official talk.  Instead we'll just hang out and chat.  And, because knitters are a great audience for knitting, I'm bringing some projects from the books (including a few ones from KCC2 that have never [...]

Coming Soon

You know what's really sort of awesome?  When people you like and respect, people whose books you have sitting on your shelves, come and ask you if you'd like to be a part of a project they're working on.  Hint, the answer is nearly always an enthusiastic yes (that 'yes' may or may not be accompanied by some sort of Snoopy dance of glee, but this is performed in the privacy of one's own home, so it hardly counts and needn't be discussed at any length here). So you can imagine how happy I was, many moons ago, when the [...]

Wee Hat the Third

I think the phase has passed.  I've got three hats.  The family in question has three sprockets.  I think the numbers line up pretty well.  But before they go off to live with their new owners (after all, it is still awfully warm here), I wanted to show them to you. If I can find some heads to wear them for pattern photos between now and when it gets cold enough that the kids need hats, I may do a pattern.  I have a suspicion that might not happen though.  I sort of like the idea of having these just [...]

Experiments (and a Giveaway)

I spend a lot of time reading and thinking and talking about books and how books get made and how books get to readers.  It's easy to see that the publishing industry is changing dramatically.  It's harder to figure out how to navigate the new landscape in a way that is fair and practical and interesting and still pays the bills. The balancing act is made much easier by talking to other people who are also trying to figure it all out.  I have these conversations with other members of the Visionary Authors group started by Cat Bordhi.  We all [...]
