Gnomon
I'm not quite sure how to say this. I haven't knit in, well, days and days. I think Wednesday was the last time I knit. That's four whole days with no knitting. Not a swatch, not a hat, not a sock, nothing. Part of it was that I burned my hand a bit (it's almost completely healed now, no worries). Part of it was that we got a new dining room table this weekend and spent nearly every waking moment either hauling it in and setting it up, cleaning up after that rather destructive process, playing games, or preparing and [...]
Not My Strong Suit
So the plan had been to put this pattern up on Monday. But it's ready now, and I don't really do patience if I can help it. Also, there might just possibly be something else going on on Monday that I'll want to squee about. So I'm putting it out now. Handy thing, making your own schedule. These are, of course, the magical, sanity-saving, purple hats. One is for me, and one has made its way into the post to head off to my mom. The first of these was cast on within hours of getting my hands on the [...]
Coruscate
The pattern for the Coruscate hat and mitt set is (finally) out. This was my first slouchy hat, and you watched it grow and watched me figure out how to block it to achieve proper levels of pouf (it turns out that the secret to blocking success was a giant but short bowl). I finished these way back at the end of November, and have been using them ever since. But it was only yesterday that I had my lovely friend Lauren over to model them for me. They look much more stylish on her (on me, they look warm [...]
Hats
Now while I don't generally condone matching outfits, I think there may possibly be an exception for hats. Especially hats that don't really match so much as share some characteristics. The exception is even easier to grant if the hats will generally adorn the heads of people who live in different states. Really, the chances of these hats being worn at the same time in the same place is pretty low. The risk of hat duplication embarrassment would be far higher with a hat from Target, right? I'm declaring it an acceptable risk. The first hat was made for my [...]
Magic Hat
Do you see what I meant when I said this hat had the power to keep me sane? Look at the top of that hat. Pretty damn nifty if I do say so myself. Tidy and orderly and soothingly regular...the sort of hat that could well be expected to keep the universe together. Unfortunately, if you're seeing the crown, that means it's done. So I did the only reasonable thing and cast on another one. It's not quite the same (smaller scale version of the pattern, a few more purl stitches, a bit less lacy), but it seems likely to [...]
Conspiracy
I have become convinced that the universe is conspiring against me (this is rarely a good sign). It seems quite clear that something out there is trying to gather up the last tiny scraps of my patience and sanity, tear them up into teeny tiny shreds, and sprinkle them over me in the world's most infuriating ticker tape parade. One of the few things keeping me sane is this hat. I am completely smitten with it. I love everything about it. The yarn, the design, the color, they're all perfect. Alas, it is almost done. I don't want it to [...]
Not A Sock
I think the sock gods are angry at me for my recent hat dalliance. I keep overhearing murmurs that sound like 'three good years of faithful friendship' and 'ungrateful upstart' and 'feckless dilettante.' All of which is my way of saying that take two from yesterday may also be a bit too variegated. It's been set aside while I ponder its fate. The secret sock is going well (smashingly well really), so I do have some hope that the sock gods haven't completely cast me out for my inconstant ways. It could just be an attempt to torment me though [...]
Apparently I Just Can’t Knit
Yesterday saw the (slightly more vicious than was perhaps strictly necessary) ripping of the two-headed hat. This morning I cast on for the second version. Yesterday's hat used 8 repeats of the stitch pattern. A bit of measuring and swatching and needle swapping had led me to firmly believe I should remove 2 of those repeats. Now just to review, 8-2=6. Do keep that in the back of your mind as we go forward. This morning bright and early I sat down to cast on the the second version of the hat (the 'bright and early' bit may have been [...]
I Really Should Know Better
You know that little feeling...that subtle nagging feeling that says 'that might not be quite the right size?' Yeah. I should really learn to listen to that feeling. The hat I was working on? The one I was three inches into? The one that seemed to be just eating up yarn? Yeah. I tried it on. It was too big. I gave it a tiny gentle tug. It grew and grew and grew. A second later The Boy came by and stuck his head in there along side my head. That's really not a good sign for a hat. It [...]
