Oh the Weather Outside was Frightful…
But my hat was so delightful! See, I told you the hat was much cuter on. And warm...very very warm. I'm fairly sure I could stand outside in that bluster and blow for just about forever and my head would not be cold. (Please pardon the blowing hair, it really was kind of stormy outside. We're standing in the driveway out of the main force of it because otherwise the tassel sticks straight out in the wind. Speaking of tassel, it's really the tassel that makes the whole thing, it's ridiculously fun.) Everyone should immediately go get their very own [...]
Just Right
I'm more or less in love with this hat. It's ridiculously simple, unreasonably tall, and quite possibly the warmest hat in the history of yarn. I can't decide how I like it best...as shown there (with the top flopped over), with the brim folded up once and only a bit of pouf on the top, or with the brim folded up twice so it sits more firmly against the top of my head. Then there's the always amusing option of wearing it inside out. I may also have made a giant tassel to slip in to the top as the [...]
No Really…It Will Be Cute
Back in March, I went to the Black Swamp Spinner's Guild Market Day. I bought pencil roving. I brought it home and, within a day or two, I cast on for a hat. It was a hat of epic failure. It was too big. Massively too big. Even for my giant head. There was no saving it. I eventually ripped and set the yarn in the active project basket in the family room. This basket is on the top shelf of the bookcase and had always been safe from kitten depredations. This time, not so much. There is something about [...]
Creepy Crawlies
The hat is going to have a wee flipped up bit at the brim. I had initially planned to hold this in place with a button. But the more I play with it, the more I want the hat to be reversible. That means a button won't really work so well. A pin or a brooch would work much better. Now of course I'm happy to try and track down something cool (oh etsy, your siren song draws me in every time), but I'm also a fan of the use what you have approach. Alas, I'm not really a brooch [...]
Shows Potential
I know this still doesn't look exactly awe-inspiring. But I assure you it should be cool when it gets a bit more done. It will be all swooshes and diagonals and angles. If things go according to plan (always a big if) it should be reversible. And it might just give me an excuse to indulge my burgeoning button obsession. Of course that won't happen if I don't find some time to actually sit down and make more stitches.
Knitter’s Choice
I feel like I have been slacking. This is actually a pretty ridiculous way to feel. I've turned 51 patterns in the last two (and a bit) years. That's a rate of aaaaalmost two patterns a month, which isn't exactly slow. And of course that's only counting the patterns that are out. I've got quite a few lined up and waiting to make their appearance in one form or another. But it's been an unusually long time since I put out a pattern, and it's bugging me. This isn't for any lack of patterns to hand. I have two all [...]
Not Quite According to Plan
You'll recall my friend Alphonse. He's been a perfect house guest for the the last several weeks. Doesn't make a mess, doesn't eat all the chocolate, doesn't hog the washing machine. Totally charming fellow. It's time I put him to work. Yesterday, I cast on for my entry in the ongoing 'fluffiest hat in the history of the world' contest. Now because I am a reasonable and responsible knitter, and because this was a new yarn, and because I wanted the end result to fit my head, I had dutifully done a swatch before I cast on. Admittedly it was [...]
Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No
It seemed like a good plan at the time. It really did. The lovely Lauren, she who is kind enough to model for me so often, needs a hat. We discussed hats and the colors and shapes in which hats can be made. We measured. I marveled at the size of her head (really, it's 2 inches smaller than mine, I'm so jealous). I swatched. I cast on. I knit. Then...then I realized that the thing on my needles sucked. It wasn't 'a little rough.' It wouldn't 'all come out when blocked.' It didn't need 'just a few more rows [...]
Pleased to Meet You
Meet Alphonse. He's my new toy prop. He is a perfect example of the odd encounters that this knitting thing can lead to. I found him on an online antique store. I sent off a little email to the store asking what size his head was. Instead of just answering me, the shop wrote back asking why on earth that would matter. They went to great length to explain that this was a prop. It was meant for display. It was absolutely positively not for real hats. I (graciously I hope) explained that I wanted him to be a working [...]
