Surgically implanted slouch

Ok so this hat? This hat is a bit tall. That's because it's meant to be the perfect slouch hat. By which I mean "I shall be surgically implanting the perfect amount of slouch as part of the finishing such that I am never ever ever relying on my own abilities to artfully arrange it on the fly when I yank it out of my coat pocket." Because I don't know about you, but sometimes I do not feel confident in my ability to effortlessly arrange my hats on the fly. I sometimes worry it will look like I accidentally [...]

I think I've figured out what I like about holding mohair along with another yarn (cough, or at least one of the things...it would be silly to pretend there's only one). It gives you a much wider range of practical gauges. Let me explain. The base yarn here is Seven Sisters Arts Meridian, which is a lovely classic sock yarn. Smooth, merino/nylon mix, 400something yards in a skein. Delightful stuff. Knit it up at 8-9 stitches to the inch and you'll have marvelous socks. Go more to that 7-8 stitches per inch range and you'll have a delightful fabric for [...]

Somehow

I would like someone to knit me a giant, snuggly sweater out of these two yarns held together. Seriously, they make a fabric that is downright slinky. Actually it's better than that. It's somehow slinky and cozy at the same time. And you'd think those would be opposite ends on some sort of spectrum, but somehow this manages to do both and do them well. I am unspeakably in love with it. I realize it may look like a bit plain and a bit rumpled to the outside observer, but I promise, it is going to be the most amazingly [...]

Absurdities

Look, we went a little overboard for easter when I was a kid. There were egg trees. As in, bring a branch (cough, or several branches) inside, put them in water and wait for them to flower. (Seriously, forcing some branches in the spring is the easiest and cheapest way to get a really showy flower arrangement that lasts for weeks, highly recommend!) Then bedeck the poor, innocent, unsuspecting branch with a staggering number of decorated easter eggs. We had boxes of intricately decorated easter eggs we got out every year (think christmas ornaments, but for easter). It was a [...]

Preparatory remarks

I know. I know I really do. It doesn't look like much of anything just yet. But I promise, I know where this is going, and it will be the most unspeakably wearable hat in all the world. Just give me a little bit to get it past the 'um, it appears to be an inch of ribbing, an inch of ribbing is, by definition, dead boring' phase of things. Bonus points to anyone who has been around long enough (and it would be a very very very long time indeed...) to recognize this one and know what's coming next!

In which I am rather firm

This is transcribed from a twitter thread. But twitter threads tend to be a bit impermanent, and I wanted to keep a record of this here to point to as needed (though you can totally also go read it on twitter to see the replies/conversations that spring up around it).  But, if you're wondering about the short, choppy paragraphs, that's why! ❉❉❉❉❉ Something shitty happens pretty much every time I bring out a new pattern. Someone (or more often a couple of someones) comes along and whuffles and flutters about how it's SCANDALOUS that I charge EIGHT WHOLE DOLLARS for [...]

Iterations

I mean to be fair, I did swatch a few other combos before I settled in on the one I'll be using. Two strands of the Silk Cloud (bottom) held together were a bit wispier than what I want for this project. And two strands of a different, slightly darker, alpaca fluff show were perfect (that's the swatch on top), but I didn't have enough of the yarn and couldn't find more (largely because I don't have any idea what yarn it is because the label has evaporated, so alas, I cannot tell you what it is no matter how [...]

Mix and match

Sometimes? Sometimes if you can't find just the right yarn you simply make it instead. I want the drape that you get with a skinny yarn, but the halo that you get from fuzzy yarn, and I think,if all goes according to plan, that these should be just about perfect together. The one on the bottom is Seven Sisters Art' Meridian in Quartzite, the one on the top is Shibui's Silk Cloud in Ash. And together? Well together they glow!

Scrambled

Remember this nonsense from last year? How the sudden urge to swaddle perfectly innocent eggs in lacy underthings overtook me and I didn't even have the decency to fight it? I mean last March was grim. I wasn't going to fight much of anything that kept me home and brought a bit of joy. But really this was an impressive level of absurdity, even for me. This March feels a bit different. We've all seen the damage that selfish, hateful, willfully ignorant folks can do. And an awful lot of us have lost people, either because they died or because [...]
