Tiny Nonsense

Magic tricks

It seems only fair for a mushroom to know a magic trick or two, right? And one of my favorite tricks with these is that you can get them to stand up properly...as long as you're willing to do a bit of magic of your own. Now, the ones with nice chunky stems will just sort of stand up without any extra fiddling. Especially if you slip a coin or a washer in the bottom to make it nice and flat. But...you can do a few things to further stack the odds in your favor. The more weight you can [...]

Never ending swatches

Ok, we did swatches parts one and two already, let's see if we can't fit the last three all in at once! I want all the bonus points for reblocking this swatch so I could take a decent photo of it for you. Yarn is Chickadee by Quince and Co in the color Angelica. What I probably should have done is shown you blocked and unblocked versions of this swatch.  For you see, this stitch pattern looks...ah...shall we say indistinct in it's unblocked state? That's a polite word for it, right?⠀ ⠀ But...the good news here is that when you [...]

Foraged

I should probably spin you a tale.  I should tell you some enchanting story about where these came from and how they happened.  But I'm not going to do that.  I'm just going to tell you that Foraged is out, and it's 10% off for the next few days with the code FAIRYRING. You have to come up with your own story.  Which really...if you have props this cute, shouldn't be all that hard to do! For you see, there is no story on my part.  I pretty much just wondered if I could knit a mushroom, then found myself knitting [...]

Yet more swatches

We're picking up where we left off last time and showing off more swatches for this year's book (which is coming in, checks watch, um, about three weeks). We'll start with this one. Yarn is Signature Sock Yarn by OnTheRound in the color Robin’s Egg. I am a sucker for cables. I like designing them. I like knitting them. I like wearing them. But...they can be sneaky little beasts. If you're going to put them on socks, you need to have a plan. For you see, cables make your fabric less stretchy than stockinette or ribbing. And you sort [...]

Stockpile

So sometimes, you are outside cleaning up your yard after a storm (almost as though you were a responsible grownup who made good decisions) and you Just Keep Seeing Acorn Twins. Not only that, but you keep seeing acorn twins where one half has the acorn still attached and the other half doesn't.  So you start picking them up and stuffing your pockets full of them. And then, after you've made enough headway on the yard that you can call it a day (the idea of 'enough' has a certain flexibility to it you understand) you go inside, plunge your hand [...]

Shortly…

The pattern for these is due out Tuesday if all goes according to plan.  If you want a heads up (and a discount) when the pattern drops, make sure you're on the list (mailing list folks always get a bigger discount than the one I post here). And while you wait, I've got a little scavenger hunt for you.  You're going to need some stuffing (I use wool roving, you can totally use the polyester stuff if that's what you have, or even a cotton ball or two if you can't track down anything else).  You're also going to need a fat straw...one [...]

Big Yarn, Beautiful Lace Knits, review and giveaway

Knitting doesn't have a lot of rules.  Really it doesn't. Which is good, as I am not generally inclined to follow arbitrary rules. It has some pretty solid guidelines.  Things like "a gauge swatch will help give you some idea of the characteristics of your finished object" or "your stitches will be smoother and more even if you block your knitting." And it has some traditions.  And some people get really upset if you play with those traditions.  Everyone who has ever sent me a message that starts "I've been knitting longer than you've been alive," (never ever the sign [...]

Swatches…so many swatches

It's high time I start showing off some of the bits and pieces for the upcoming book!  And for me, that means swatches.  So Many Swatches. Now, if I were cooler, I'd have this pinned out and under tension for you.  Because this is one of those stitches that just absolutely pops when it's stretched a bit (always a good choice for sock patterns, where you generally have a bit of negative ease).  But instead you'll just have to imagine me stretching it just a tiny bit and making cooing noises as I revel in the tiny twisted stitches and perfect lines. Yarn is [...]

Bite

So folks who bought the Peached pattern already know this, but there was a little something extra in there.  I included instructions on how to modify your peach a bit and turn it into an apple.  But I didn't actually have an apple knit quite yet (and wow did I want to get that one out in a timely fashion), so I didn't say anything about it in the pattern description. I like to work on the theory that no one will be too terribly mad if they happen to find out there's something extra and unexpected in there! But, [...]
