Book Yarn, Part VII

And now, Saffron Dyeworks. I discovered Saffron Dyeworks when I was sourcing yarns for the first volume of Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet.  I fell promptly in love and am still helplessly smitten today.  The Polypodium vulgare socks, from Saffron Dyeworks' tush are some of my very favorites from that book (shhh, don't tell the others, they'll be jealous).  I was delighted to have the chance to work with them again. On the right is Pali Sport in the color Blue Greyonyx.  This 3 ply superwash merino yarn is somehow more than the sum of its parts.  It's not an unusual fiber [...]

Book Yarn, Part VI

This morning, Shibui. On the right is Sock in the color Wasabi.  It's a superwash merino, and it comes in an impressive range of semi-solids and a handful of multis (and, in a move I wish more companies would make, the multis list which of the semi-solids they're made with so you can pair up yarns with confidence, even on a computer monitor).  I've been a fan of this yarn for a long time and used it for Serab way back in the first book. On the left is Baby Alpaca DK in the color Flaxen.  This is a 3 [...]

Book Yarn, Part V

Next on the list, The Plucky Knitter. I first encountered Plucky Knitter yarns at Sock Summit.  I fell for them immediately, and I fell hard.  I may possibly have walked to the register cradling the yarn in my arms, as there was too much of it to simply hold in my hands.  Part of that purchase got turned into Whippersnappers within just a few months.  Plucky yarns can be a little tricky to get, but I assure you they're well worth the effort! On the right is Plucky Feet in Sticky Toffee.  This is a 4 ply, 90% merino 10% [...]

Book Yarn, Part IV

And now, String Theory. I confess, String Theory's yarns are new to me.  I kept finding absolutely gorgeous projects on Ravelry, falling madly in love with the yarn, clicking through to see who had made it, and seeing String Theory's name over and over and over again.  Eventually, I took the hint.  It was clear I simply had to get my hands on some. On the right is Capaer Sock in the color Blue Hill.  This is an 80% merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon blend (always a favorite of mine) and comes in the most breathtaking colors imaginable.  I have [...]

Book Yarn, Part III

Today, Malabrigo. Now while I'm guessing no one was surprised to see orange yarns in the last Book Yarn post, I bet the same can't be said for blue.  I've long been...let's say hesitant...about blue.  It just seemed like such a safe choice when there was all that orange and yellow and gray out there to flirt with.  But Malabrigo, Malabrigo has made a believer out of me.  These are too pretty to resist. On the right is Arroyo in the color Azules.  Arroyo is a superwash merio.  I used it for the Ruction cowl and mitts in Rabble Rousers [...]

Book Yarn, Part II

Next up, Black Bunny Fibers. Now I believe my position on the whole orange issue has been well established.  Namely 'yes please' and 'let's do that again.'  So I don't think anyone will be surprised to see colors like this in the next book. On the right we've got BFL Luxe Blend in Hedgehog's Nose (love this title, I used to have a hedgehog and it's spot on).  This is a 70% blue-faced leicester, 20% silk, 10% cashmere yarn, and it is tremendously lovely.  Now I'll be honest, it's a hair on the thin side for how I like to [...]

Book Yarn, Part I

It's become something of a tradition around here to talk a bit about the yarns I'm using in the books before they come out.  I'm a firm believer in continuing traditions (and I don't want to leave the blog quiet while I'm off fondling sheep stealing yarn visiting Rhinebeck, so here we go again. First off, Lorna's Laces. The lovely yellow yarn over on the right is Solemate in the color Magnificent Mile.  I believe this yarn is currently auditioning for most science fiction sounding yarn ever.  It's made of 30% Outlast, which seems to be some sort of miracle [...]

Smashing

The photo shoot was this weekend and it went wonderfully well.  I couldn't have asked for better.  The weather was perfect, the locations were properly picturesque, everyone looked marvelous, and Zoë did amazing things with her camera.  All of the knitting and props made it home safe, no one was injured or arrested, and I think everyone is still on speaking terms with me (so I likely wasn't too crazy).  It was all around brilliant. And, for the first time ever, a big book photo shoot did not coincide with an incipient bout of pneumonia.  Can I just say how [...]

Packed

My packing list for tomorrow's photo shoot includes (in part): heads, hands, feet, needles, pliers.  It really does read like I'm packing up after a small murder spree.  I promise though, there's not been any carnage...yet.  Everybody keep a good thought tomorrow and Saturday.  With any luck at all, this will all go brilliantly.
