Field Trip, String Theory

Ok, I really should wrap this up.  I'm sure it's tacky to talk about a trip for longer than the trip lasted.  But man, it was a long trip with lots of yarn-y bits, and I don't want to leave any of them out.  Especially not String Theory, that would be a dreadful mistake. You (you, the collective blog reading/rav forum chatting folks) are actually to blame for my String Theory obsession.  I kept seeing beautiful socks, going 'what is that yarn,' investigating, and finding String Theory.  So naturally I went and used them for piles and piles and piles [...]

Polyommatus corydon Knit Along

I’ll be having knit alongs for each of the pattern pairs in The Knitter’s Curiosity Cabinet, Volume II.  This month we're starting the two patterns inspired by the Polyommatus corydon print (as always, you can click on the print to see it bigger, these prints really are marvelous). So of course we have socks...ruffly frilly amazing socks. And just to counter out all that girlishness, a slightly more subdued hat. If you’d like to join in, swing on by the ravelry thread and get knitting.  This is pretty laid back for a knit along (too many rules make my head [...]

Sandy

One of the goals for the San Francisco trip was to get some photos of the current sock.  We tried going out and finding something with the bridge in the background (we're tourists, we're allowed), but it wasn't quite working out.  So I stuffed the socks in my purse as we headed out on our last day in town.  We were going to Point Reyes for a bit of beach storming, and I thought there might possibly be the odd bit of pretty we could use for sock pictures. Yup, that will do. That too. We stomped our way out [...]

Look, Knitting!

Lest you think I've only been strolling about taking in the sights and eating delicious food, let me assure you there has been knitting too.  Plenty of knitting. It started when we took the sock to the ocean on Saturday.  He enjoyed the view, but was a little worried the breeze would blow him away and he'd be lost at sea. This was not a totally unfounded concern.  It was more than a bit breezy, and he'd seen what had happened to socks at the shore in the past.  The sock was somewhat reassured as he was still tethered to [...]

One Down

The first sock is done!  See?  All the way done, right down to the pretty little toes.  And don't worry, the little bars of yarn all lay a bit straighter when my foot (as opposed to the blocker) is filling the sock out. That's String Theory Merino DK in Didgeridoo.  Now, 1 skein of that yarn has 280 yards.  Knowing that I have big feet, and knowing that I wanted to make socks from this yarn, I bought two skeins.  When I finished up the first sock (after the requisite amount of preening), I popped it on the scale.  It [...]

Scoundrel

And now, the result of yesterday's little adventure (that is, the pretty pictures that will likely show up in some format in the pattern, as opposed to the one that shows off the moment of 'look, train!' that yesterday's post featured). And just so you know, these socks will be part of another mini book (something on the scale of Rabble Rousers).  It should be out this fall in both paper and electronic versions, and will have 6-7 patterns (some socks, some accessories).  These socks are going to be called Scoundrel, and they will be on the cover (it's about [...]

Remiss

Yes, yes indeed I have been remiss.  My magical socks?  The super fast ones?  Well they are indeed quick, but they are not quite self knitting.  I'll likely finish up the first one this weekend.  In the meantime, I think I've figured out why this yarn seems to be magic. When you look at it straight on, it is blue.  Blue and purple and green.  But still, the predominant color is totally blue.  See? Ok, when you turn it and look down the sock, you'll see the yarn has a bit of a halo.  That halo, quite perplexingly, is not [...]

Promising

I'm unreasonably taken with this sock.  Let's get a picture up to show you what I'm talking about. The yarn is drop dead gorgeous.  It's String Theory Merino DK in Didgeridoo and I love it to distraction.  It's a smidge more purple in real life, but it was early in the morning when I snapped this and the light was all glowy and yellow and I do not love you enough to either retake the picture later in the day or muck about in photoshop to fix it.  This is one of those magic color changing yarns and it plays [...]

That’s Better

Last night I found myself feeling restless.  I couldn't settle.  I might even have been flailing around like an over-tired two year old.  Then it hit me.  I needed to knit.  Not a swatch (swatching for the next book is well underway, and I like doing it, but it was not what I needed).  A proper project. That realization made, I walked over to the card catalog (it's where the really really good yarn lives...the yarn I will totally absolutely be using just as soon as I have time), slammed through a few of the drawers, grabbed the prettiest thing [...]
