Squeak

We can talk about the pattern later (next time I'll show you the two sides together, and then you can revel in the niftiness of the stitches) but for now, look at that loop of yarn. That loop is what happens when you're working the last part of the hand and realize you're going to be really close on yarn.  Really really close.  Really a lot.  And so, in an effort to make the most of the available yarn, you go find the other end of the yarn (hint, it's not very far away, that's the whole source of the [...]

In which Knitters live up to expectations

Yes, I was gone.  And yes, I have returned.  Normally, on trips like this, I do my very best to either go a bit early or stay a bit late or carve out some time in the middle to go exploring.  Alas, this year, that didn't happen.  The current spate of snow storms meant flights were a mess, and I couldn't make it on time.  (As a side note, I was flying United, and they were less than impressive.  Once it became clear snow was going to mess up my travel, I asked if I could take the exact same [...]

Repeat

The set I've been working on offers a good opportunity for a little instructional aside.  You know how variegated yarn sometimes acts very differently from one project to the next?  I've got a lovely little demonstration of why. You may recall I'm worried about running short of yarn on this project. So because I'm going to be using every inch of the yarn I have, I'm trying to be reasonably clever.  Once the cowl got to be just long enough, I put it aside on an extra needle and moved on to the hat.  The plan was to make the [...]

Sun Valley Fibers Giveaway

I don't want to make anyone else jealous, but I think I might possibly have the coolest job ever.  Visiting fiber festivals is market research, I get to indulge my bossy tendencies write patterns, and I spend most of my days at home in my pajamas in the company of the Kitten Overlords.  And if that weren't enough, every now and then a yarn company gets in touch and asks if I might possibly like to see some of their yarn (yes) and maybe even share some of it with you guys (also yes).  It's pretty darn cool.  Today I'd [...]

Hypnotic

So Wednesday's trip to Webs was lovely and totally met my yarn acquisition needs for the week month near future.  I had absolutely no intention of seeking out more yarn on the trip.  But somehow, completely without my conscious intervention, this happened. I just sort of fell in and couldn't pull myself out without bringing a pair of them home with me.  I'm sure you understand.  The way the color is put on the yarn is fabulous...it's not this stretch is blue and this stretch is purple and this stretch is green.  Rather, each bit of yarn has all the [...]

In which the lighting is bad, but the yarn is good

Wednesday I got up early, dropped The Boy off at that pesky work thing, and ventured west.  A few hours later, I found myself in front of Webs.  Now, I've shopped on Webs' site and listened to their podcast for years.  One of my first thoughts upon realizing we were headed to Boston was hmmm, that's not far from Webs.  I was rather looking forward to going, and I was not disappointed. Now, that's not to say it was quite like I expected.  I think I assumed it was something like the world's biggest, coziest yarn store with a [...]

Field Trip, Yarn Store

Alrighty, last of the trip yarn.  I promised we were just about done, and this should wrap it up.  So, I told you we visited String Theory, and I told you we visited Swans Island.  Those were the two big, intentional yarn stops.  But sometimes it happens that, while you're going about your business on non-yarn related excursions, you come across a yarn store on the way.  That happened twice. Once was Over the Rainbow Yarn in Rockland Maine. (Rockland is also home of Primo, our very favorite restaurant ever.  If you're ever anywhere near there you simply must go.  [...]

These Things Keep Happening

Somehow, despite all my firm intentions to work on only one (or, you know, two) big projects at a time, something snuck up on me the other day.  I really couldn't help it.  It started as a swatch.  A simple little swatch.  Then there was a period of graph paper experimentation and a bit of shameless arithmetic.  Then came the creeping realization that what I had was an idea, not a swatch, and that the idea had tremendous potential.  The sort of potential that results in books around these parts. Now of course it's in the early stages.  More specifically, [...]

Non-linear

For reasons that are, I'm sure, totally valid, I've somehow managed not to recount this trip in any sort of linear fashion.  These things happen sometimes.  Some days it was a choice between 'some sort of blog post' or 'nothing at all because figuring out how to write about what happened after whatever I wrote about last time sounds too hard right now,' and something won out over nothing.  I hope you don't mind.  It does mean I have to do a bit of a jump now though, but I didn't want to neglect to tell you about some of [...]
