Cranked
I cannot even begin to explain how fast and satisfying this is. This, which is about seven inches of knitting (with the brim unfolded) is what I cranked out in one afternoon of knitting. And really, I could probably have finished it in a day, but my elbow would not appreciate that, and it was getting dark, so I exercised a bit of restraint. But still...that's more than half a hat in an afternoon. That's delightfully quick.
Requisite amount
This is absolutely providing the requisite amount of instant gratification. It's a hat. A hat for my giant head. And it's only 60 stitches around, for the yarn is just that delightfully thick and smushy. It's Martin's Lab Big Singles in Glitter, and it's delightful. And yes, I will need two skeins of it to get through the whole hat (it's like 77 yards per 100 grams). But it is also only going to take me like two days to knit, so that seems more than fair.
Two Paths
There are two paths to instant gratification in knitting: teeny tiny project, or absolutely gigantic yarn. Today I am choosing the second path.
Gleaming
The sun sets here at 4:01pm today. The sun has been setting around 4 since the middle of November, and it will keep on setting around 4 until the middle of January. And I? I do not do well with mid afternoon sunsets. So when the dark starts to feel a little overwhelming, I make these. I cannot tell you why they help, but I know that they do. And I cannot promise they will help anyone else, but I suspect that they might. I suspect it because every year, when I share them online, I hear from so many [...]
Motivation
Every time it snows, I think "oh, I should go outside and take some pictures." And then when I do I quickly realize: it's cold and I am in my pajamas it's actually weirdly hard to take pictures of tiny things in snow and have them look cute because mostly snow is just white and flat and kinda boring it's still cold and I am still in my pajamas and am I still outside in the snow taking boring pictures while shivering And then I come inside and kick the snow off my slippers and wander towards the nearest teapot [...]
Math problem
Ok, so this feels suspiciously close to knitting a math problem. But in that nifty way where you're pretty sure someone with more formal math training than you would say something clever about it, but you absolutely don't need to know how any of that works in order to make/use/enjoy it. You can just knit for a bit and then fold it up just so and then play with/wear it and go huh, well, isn't that nifty. Though I do currently have the weirdest set of tabs up in my browser trying to figure out the right actual math words [...]
Guesses
So...any guesses? This is currently winning the award for 'looks most like a crime in a muppet factory,' but it will soon get all folded up and wrangled in on itself and turned into something much more staid and respectable. Well...in form. The colors will stay their delightfully exuberant selves. Wouldn't want to stray too far into respectability. It might be contagious.
Monthly Reminder
When we get to vote, Americans overwhelmingly support protecting and expanding abortion access. In the year and a half since a handful of Supreme Court justices restricted the bodily autonomy of half the country's population, voters in at least seven states (including red states like Ohio) have voted in favor of abortion access. That's because most of us realize that we want to be able to decide for ourselves if we want to be pregnant. Most of us want our doctors to be able to help us if we or a loved one have a medical emergency while pregnant. Even [...]
Purple
I am unspeakably happy about having a purple that's light enough to actually let the light through (this is the new paper I got off ebay, the original stuff had a purple, but it was so very very dark that you really couldn't see through it if you had more than maybe two or three layers of paper, so it didn't really work for stars).
