Hangtime

And now...now we hang the skirt for a few days before hemming. This is to let the fabric do whatever stretching and falling out it's going to do under its own weight before I hem it. Now I fully admit this is important if you're making some kinds of skirt. Or if you have some kinds of brain. And if you are making that sort of skirt or have that sort of brain, and you need your hem to be really really really straight, you need to first let it hang, then put it on, then get up on a [...]

It has pockets

Or rather, it has one pocket. For reasons totally reasonable reasons having to do with both me making this up as I go along and the way this is going to fit/be worn. But it is a really, truly, delightfully excellent pocket. A pocket I am proud of. A pocket that makes me feel clever. Which may very well say more about me than about the pocket...yet the good feelings persist. And we are embracing good feelings wherever we can. So I will for sure just bask in these good feelings for the moment. As always, the detailed breakdown of [...]

Putting the pieces together

Ok, so day one (where day is defined as 'several hours, which is as long as I'm willing/able to spend on this project on any given day) was getting the pieces planned out and cut out. We did that last time. Day two was getting all the skirt body pieces put together. Which started with some labeling/planning. And then proceeded to the sewing bit. Which I, of course, did in the most ridiculously complicated way possible. But my god it does make a tidy seam. And a sturdy seam. And one I can make on my basic, 21 year old [...]

A brief(ish) digression

I wish to make a skirt. Well, no, I wish to have a skirt. A very particular skirt. And in order to have the exact specific skirt I want, I will need to make it.So I have acquired several yards of lovely wool herringbone tweed. I have made a plan (a plan that does not in any way involve following the instructions of someone who knows better than me, because what fun would that be). And I have taken scissors to perfectly good fabric. You can follow along with the adventure over here, should you be so inclined! (Lots of [...]

Watery

Don't worry, you can totally water your air plants! These are set up so that the plant part easily slides apart from the knit part. And once you've slid them apart (the way my brain wants to say 'once you've slidden them apart' certainly tells us something about how grammar works in my head), you can plop the plant bit in water (just a glass or a bowl or your sink or whatever is handy), and set the knitted bit off to the side somewhere dry. My air plants seem to be happiest if I soak them for about 10-15 [...]

Peculiarities

So it seems only reasonable to add some jellyfish to the menagerie, right? I mean we already have urchins, jellyfish seem like a natural next step. The pattern is called Peculiarities, yes those are air plants for the tentacles (you can use fake ones or yarn scraps if you prefer, but don't worry you can totally water them if you use real ones), and yes this knitting pattern does come with a built in excuse to get a ridiculous drink with a mountain of whipped cream on top (the lids that come on those are what's giving our blobby friends [...]

Skyscrapers

So when I say I spent the weekend packing boxes...this is what I meant! Bonus points for kitten cameo and furniture used as barricade against the depredations of the robot overlords. I'm awaiting two more things from the printer (because I slipped and accidentally got us a little something extra...as a treat you understand...these things happen...I shall assume no one will mind). But once that's all here, these will get the last few things tucked in, get taped up, get address labels added, and head off to their new homes. But my brain insisted I get a head start this [...]

Peached

Completely coincidentally and apropos of absolutely nothing at all...Peached is back. I first made these in the fall of 2019 when the (cough, first, cough) impeachment of everyone’s least favorite felon was underway, and I felt the need for something soft that I could squeeze. Or throw against a wall. Or stab full of pins. Funny how that feeling persists. But here's the thing. We're knitters. We know that tiny actions, taken over and over again, add up. So if you're also feeling a bit ragey right now, I encourage you to find one tiny action you can take (like [...]
