Tiny Nonsense

Glazed

You don't need these. They serve absolutely no practical purpose. None whatsoever. But, much like real donuts, just because you don't need them doesn't mean you don't want them. Because really they are an awful lot of fun.  The knitting is easy (it's almost all stockinette in the round). You don't need much yarn (a couple dozen yards of your donut-colored yarn, plus a bit of icing-colored yarn if you want iced donuts). They only take a couple of hours of knitting time (yes, even if you're a slow knitter like me). And as far as I can tell, they [...]

Absurdities

Yes, another one. Another tiny bit of fluff and delight. No, I am not sorry. And I will not even have the good grace to pretend to be sorry. Once you see them finished, I think you'll understand!

Last call

Last call! The big sock sale is just about over... I have this thing where I feel like I've said a thing too many times. WAY too many times. Enough times that I'm probably annoying the stuffing out of each and every one of you. But then someone comes along and is sad because they didn't see it and missed out. So I'm stuck trying to trying to balance 'shut up stop bothering people' with 'ack someone will be mad they missed it' and that's a somewhat, um, shifting balance point. But, because Pretty Basket of Socks is Pretty [...]

Louche

We did it...we got a pattern back out Every Single Tuesday (yes, yes all five of the blasted things) All Month Long (despite BONUS SURPRISE UNEXPECTED KITTEN INTERLOPERS, about which more soon). These are Louche, and I am alarmingly fond of them. This pattern is a beautiful example of what you can do with basic ribbing and a few strategically placed increases and decreases. No lace. No cables. No brioche. No colorwork. Just nice mellow ribbing, the occasional increase or decrease to nudge things around, and lovely stretches of stockinette. Combine it with a yarn with that really shows off [...]

Grocery list

The donuts are scheduled to come out on July 6. Now, you absolutely do not need anything special to make them (I'm working on the assumption you can already tell that you need needles and yarn and stuffing just by looking at them). But if you want to get a bit, um, shall we say exuberant, there are a few things I suspect one or two of you might want to lay hands on before you get started.  So I figured I'd talk a bit about what I used so you can see what you might want and have it [...]

Stuffed

So it turns out, the thing to do to make these donuts astonishingly nifty is to stuff them super Super SUPER full. Like 'huh, I'm not sure I can actually get anything else in there' type full. I'm using weighted plastic pellets to stuff mine, and I can get just about six ounces of them in the big ones. These are the ones I like best (amazon links are affiliate links, and there's a whole weird set of laws that say I have to mention that explicitly, hence me being a weirdo), but you can totally search for [...]

Peregrinate

As promised, June is going to be all socks all month long.  The plan, (and holy smokes, it seems to be coming to fruition, we're almost done!), is to do a sock every single Tuesday (and there are five Tuesdays this month!) so we can get a bunch of our old friends out of hibernation.  We started with Dippers, then Greenhorn, we did Enchase last week, and now it's time for Peregrinate. This is actually one where I had you folks decide for me which sock we'd do this week.  I asked on twitter and instagram if you wanted these [...]

Field trip

I wandered around a yarn store. And I don't mean 'I dashed into the store right as it opened to quickly grab the stuff I'd ordered online the day before, keeping my trip as short as possible, and feeling a weird mix of guilty and worried the whole time, because as important as yarn is it's not technically a necessity and it's been kind of irresponsible to do non-necessary, in-person stuff for a long time now.' No. I mean 'I browsed. I took my time. I found new things. I bought stuff I didn't know about before I set foot [...]

Joining

This is going to be fun. Well, not this. This is about to get picked out. But then I'm going to do it again more carefully, and I think that will be fun. You see, I have a sweater with a neckline that's a bit lower than I like. And it would be the perfect sweater if only the neckline were just an inch or two higher. So I'm going to fix it. I started by putting it on and experimenting with a pin and a mirror to figure out where I wanted the neckline to fall. And it turns [...]
