Assembly

Wanna see how these go together? There's a neat little trick to it... If I were cooler, I'd figure out how to get a video out of instagram and up over here, but we all know I am not that cool. So instead I will have to just sort of point you at it and gesture broadly and say 'it's over there, help yourself.' This is one of the extra fancy stars that I'll be adding to the star book because we hit our  patreon goal! The star book will be out November 30, and anyone on the Utter, Rampant, [...]

Behind the scenes

Wanna see The Single Most Disappointing behind the scenes photo ever? I mean I'm assuming yes, because people are like that... So the stars? The stars that look achingly beautiful and downright ethereal and almost enchanted once you have them in the window with the light of a brilliant winter sunset streaming through them? The stars that can, through nothing more than geometry and light, make midafternoon sunsets almost bearable? The stars that soothe my very soul with the power of tidiness and order? Yeah...you wanna see how I took photographs of those delicate little slips of joy? Because it's [...]

Q&A

Ok, tell me what you want to know about the stars! I've been writing knitting patterns long enough that I pretty much know where all the questions will be on those. But the stars are a slightly different thing (amazing how many of the pattern writing skills translate right over though, instructions are instructions no matter what you're making), and I want to make sure I answer any common questions. I've already got sections on supplies/materials (check out yesterday's post if you want links to the paper and other things I use in mine), general folding tips, putting them together, [...]

Star Stuff

The star book is just about ready! But I suspect a few of you may want to have your supplies ready when it comes out, so I wanted to do a quick run down of the things I use to make my stars. Paper The paper you use for these really matters. It needs to be translucent (so light can shine through it and show off all the layers). It needs to be lightweight (so you can fold it several times without it becoming too thick to work with). And it needs to hold a crisp fold (so your star [...]

Almost done!

The star book is juuuuuust about done! I spent yesterday afternoon outside getting pictures (they require the sun to be both bright and low in the sky, which happens for about 20 minutes on November afternoons in Maine, so it requires precision timing). The plan is for the book to come out at the very end of November. Anyone who is a patron at one of the levels where you get stuff (so that's the Utter, Rampant, or Complete Nonsense tiers) at any point from when it comes out until the end of January, 2023 will be able to download [...]

The general shape of things

Ok, so the star book is...delightfully close to done! It starts with a general guide to making the stars (things like supplies and folding advice and how to put them together and how to hang them), then has folding instructions for 6 different stars. It's clocking in at 90 pages, and everything is on track to have it out at the very end of November (I'll do a supply list/shopping resources post about a week before it comes out so you can have stuff on hand for release day). Anyone who is a patron at one of the tiers where [...]

Accidentally?

I love these more than I should admit. And...um...I may somehow accidentally be 90 pages into a book of instructions on how to make them? Because these things tend to happen when I'm left unsupervised? Apparently? I'll explain the details of that starting next week, but the quick and dirty version is 'it'll come out at the very end of November, and if you're in one of the patreon tiers where you get stuff between when it comes out and the end of January, you'll get if, after that it will be available to buy elsewhere, but only patrons are [...]

Um…several

The first big patreon project is going to be a little book of instructions for the transparent paper stars! Is this secretly an excuse for me to do a massive info dump on one of my special interests? I mean yes. But let's be honest, that's true of most anything I do, so why fight it! The general plan is that folks who are in any of the 'I send you stuff' tiers will get it in time to fill their windows up for this winter. If you're one of those folks who's been asking me to write [...]

Vibe shift

Don't get me wrong, I love fall. Fall is glorious. Fall is chilly mornings and crisp afternoons and bright leaves and yummy food. But right after fall comes winter. Winter with its frigid nights and icy roads and 4pm sunsets. And that can be kind of rough. Every year I fill my windows with paper stars to make the most of what little light there is. And every year I show you a few of them and staunchly refuse to teach you how to make them. But this year...this year that changes. Because this year there are enough folks on [...]
