Totally not a sock
I can see why yesterday's post might have left you wondering if it was a sock. But, as I am resistant to the charms of toe-up socks, that's not quite it. Let's see if this helps... There are not one... Not two... But three of these things floating around here (cough, and I have it on good authority that there may soon be more, I had a lot of purple yarns floating about). And I remain more amused than I should. And I may very well have formulated a tiny and ridiculous scheme to cheer up any midwinter, broken leg [...]
I have a plan
You know how sometimes things go from glimmer in the back of your mind to full on plan in about two minutes? Yeah...that's happening around here. Step one was a stash toss to grab all the little bits of purple I had lingering around (hint, lots). Step two was casting on for what I expect to be the world's quickest project ever. Let's see if the enthusiasm holds...
Flip it around
I keep peeking inside this hat because I like how it looks on the inside almost (almost...there's still a clear winner) as much as how it looks on the outside. So here's the outside (look...it's gotten bigger)! And here's the inside. And here's another shot (pulled properly inside out so you can tell what side is the top...because that last one is a little crumpled). Blocking
We've talked about this before, but just for the record, I'm still strongly in favor of blocking your cowls. And I'm still absolutely convinced this is the best way to do it. I started by threading blocking wires through the fabric at the top and bottom (you can hold them closed with a paperclip, or you can just keep threading the ends through until you've used up the whole wire). Then I used long needles tucked under the wires to make spokes at the top, and set the whole thing on a roll of paper towels. There's some flexibility here. [...]
Alright, let’s fix them
Back in early August, The Boy got a pair of the spiffy Allbirds shoes (the ones made of wool!) to wear as slippers. He likes them and has worn them around the house for the last few months. However, come the end of December, it became clear there was a problem. The lining of the shoes had worn through over his big toes, and the outer layer of fabric was starting to get thin. If we didn't do something, there would soon be a hole. We didn't really want to buy new ones (especially if they only last 5 months...), [...]
Now for the fun bit

That’s officially a pair of socks
So the sock grew. And grew. And pretty soon it was a real live fully grown sock! They're officially done (the toe has been grafted and the ends woven in and the socks blocked since this picture was taken), the pattern is officially done, all we need now is proper pattern photos. However, that's trickier than it usually is right now because of both the leg and the weather. You know how sometimes you have a new experience and you all of a sudden you learn a whole bunch of things that maybe should have been obvious already but you never quite thought of? Like how it takes a lot of space to move around on a knee scooter? And how people who leave pee on the toilet seats in accessible bathrooms are assholes? The hat has continued to grow (as have the snow drifts...it's blustery out there). And we're at that point where the brim simply must be finished if I'm to retain my sanity. Which means that we're at a really good point to discuss something sneaky about hat brims (and knitted fabric in general). So, see how this is just a hair shy of 6 inches (yes, coolest ruler in the land, yes, it belongs in your knitting basket, and yes amazon links are, as always, affiliate links)?
