Rapunzel
So while I did not actually manage to knit a brand new house, I do have something new to show you. Well, no, the towers are not actually new. I knit them back when I knit the houses, I just didn't share them when I first knit them. I didn't show them to anyone back then because the thought of adding Yet Another Thing into that house pattern (the house pattern that already included two different shapes of house in three different sizes and five gauges, had four pages of charts, seven pages of step-by-step photos, and four pages of [...]
Grand Plans
Did I have grand plans to knit an extra of each of the patterns that are coming back so I could talk about them and tell you little stories about them and give you soft fuzzy feelings about them? And so I'd have some sort of content to share with you while I'm doing the never ending list of tiny, fiddly tasks that are involved in this massive project? Yes! Did I manage to pull that off for the hearts and the stars and the acorns? Yeah, somehow I did! Did I manage to do that for the houses? Did [...]
“Power mad”
Ok, back to needles! We talked about whether you need to use DPNs (no, use anything that lets you knit in the round) and how to think about gauge for tiny things (usually 'make a dense fabric' rather than 'hit a specific gauge'). But there are times you need to think about gauge more precisely. For my patterns, that's mostly for things you can wear. For wearables, getting a specific finished size is usually important. A hat won’t fit if it’s 2 inches bigger or smaller than you expect. So getting a particular gauge is important, and you will need [...]
Completely normal and reasonable
I only like these a completely normal and reasonable amount. The amount most people would like them. Not at all the amount that would cause a person's friends to privately express concerns about their welfare or decision making skills. Yup. The totally normal and correct amount. For sure. They'll be out soon! They'll be the first pattern to come out under the new setup, and I'll be doing things a bit differently, so if you want to hear when they come out, you can make that happen by clicking here and signing up to be notified when they're ready. And [...]
Stocked
The folks at MaineTransNet Youth reached out to let me know that you've gotten their queer youth craft club all stocked up! You are amazing, thank you so much! The folks organizing the club need to be careful that they don't end up with more supplies than they can use/store, so here's the plan: 1) If you've got a box packed up and ready to go, it's totally cool to still go ahead and send it, I don't want anyone wasting postage they've already bought. But if the project was still sort of in that nebulous 'oh yeah, I should [...]
Decisions decisions
I truly cannot decide if I like the big ones or the tiny ones better... The big ones I made as magnetic pin trays + pattern weights to use as I'm sewing, thus pushing them into the 'at least theoretically useful' category. But the tiny ones are just so tiny and cute and perfect, thus landing them in the 'squeeeee, I love this way too much' category. And I mean wow are those just sort of the two categories I'm least able to resist. The pattern is off with testers now. It will be the first one to come [...]
A Good Home
Any chance you have some extra yarn/needles/supplies you want send to a good home? Because I have an idea... The good folks of MainTransNet (you may remember them from the donation you helped make last month) are setting up a queer youth craft club (details on @mtnyouth's recent posts). I reached out to ask if they could use some fiber craft supplies, and they said absolutely! And, since I know more than a few of you have some yarn hanging around that you'd love to find a good home for, I asked if I could share their info and [...]
I don’t know
Let's continue last week's discussion on needles. The needle question I get most often (actually, the knitting question I get most often) is...what size needles should I use. And some of you are totally going to get mad about it, but...I don’t know. I’m sorry. I’m not being mean. I’m not messing with you. I’m not refusing to tell you as part of some weird power play. I really truly don’t know. The only way to know your needle size for sure is to swatch. But here’s the thing, getting a specific gauge (like 5 stitches per [...]
Scandalous
So, I am absolutely scandalously reusing my own work here folks. As part of the prep for the new website (which will be up in mere weeks!), I'm writing The Long Versions of answers to questions I get all the time so I can put them all in one place and point folks at them as necessary. Which is grand! But also shockingly time consuming. So time consuming that it rather cuts into the time I'd normally spend, you know, writing blog/instagram posts. So I'm cheating and using that very same content in both places. As I said, scandalous [...]
