Tiny Nonsense

More than one right way

I'm currently loving folded hems on hats. Folks tend to either think folded hems are Hard & Scary & Fancy, or they shrug and say sure I can do that. And I truly think which camp you fall into has more to do with how your brain is handling life at the moment than anything else (because sometimes anything new is Just Too Much right now, and I get it). But if you've not done them before, and you're in a headspace where you don't mind trying something new, they're pretty chill. Start by working a provisional cast on (doesn't [...]

Warn others

Wander over here if you want to watch how I actually did the darning on this one (because look, I do not feel like figuring out how to put videos on here, and instagram is making us all make videos anyway, so they can host the damn things). This is, alas, an individual enough process that I can't give you a one size fits all process to just walk through. So think of this more as generalized encouragement and cheerleading and an example rather than as instructions. But sometimes that's useful too! And folks will ask, so no, I haven't [...]

February Housekeeping

I'm trying to get in the habit of doing a little housekeeping post once a month. The theory is that it will give me a place to run down what's going away, what's coming next, and what's in progress. Plus show off a little non-knitting something or other because we cannot live on yarn alone. This time that's salt preserved lemons! I made them on stories the other day, and folks had questions. If you want to see how I make mine (or get some ideas for what to do with them), or to find out which of the retired [...]

Still shoddy

Another day, another shoddy sweater from Madewell that fell apart way too soon. This one has a massive elbow blow out after three wears. Clothes shouldn't do this. A competently made sweater should last longer than this. Someone is for sure going to ask why I have so many of Madewell's sweaters if they're such crap. It's because I bought a bunch of the exact same sweaters at the beginning of the winter before I knew they were trash. I do this a lot because I have a wobbly brain that is Very Fucking Particular about clothes (fabric content, cut, [...]

Take a look

You know what I hear all the time? Some variation of "I've never even seen a pattern like this before!" And I have to say, I kind of love hearing that. I try really hard to make my work special, and comments like that make me feel like I'm doing a good job! But they also make me realize that a lot of folks might not know what to expect if they're not used to my work. So I thought maybe we should take a look at my current project, just to sort of show you what it looks like. These [...]

You decide

Seeing as how restraint isn't my strong suit, I need you folks to decide if the wrapped variation finds its way into the embroidery project. If we hit the goal I set up by the time it comes out, I'll put it in. If we don't no big deal, there's plenty of other stuff in there (no really, I truly don't think anyone will feel slighted, there's a mountain of stuff in there, this is just something I couldn't resist playing with because I'm hopeless in the face of temptation). Head over here to see how close we are [...]

Stunts

Look, sometimes you just want to show off. To do something solely because you can. To pull off a faintly ridiculous stunt. And let's be fair, that's absolutely what's going on here. Working this with six colors is...eclectic at best, possibly even distastefully excessive. But sometimes? Sometimes you just need to embrace excess. And if you can manage to keep your inclination to excess under control with nothing more than a few scraps of yarn, well, that's not too terribly harmful in the grand scheme of things. Count yourselves lucky. You actually can work this with any even number of [...]

Yes, you can sell things you knit

People often ask if they can sell things made from my patterns. I always say yes! You can do whatever you want with things made from my patterns. You can't sell the pattern itself without permission! But you can absolutely sell the things you've made from the pattern. As far as I can tell, there's not a way for a designer to prevent a knitter from selling what they make (unless explicitly agreed to before purchase). So while I don't mind at all, I don't actually think I could stop you, even if I wanted to. This is a [...]

Destined for greatness

Here's the four-color version (because sometimes two colors isn't enough), again in both a tighter and looser spacing. Now, of course you don't actually have to work it in four colors. You can work it in just one or do it with two strands of one color and two of another, or three of one and one of another, or whatever else you can dream up. But my brain decided it just wasn't going to be happy unless I did it in four different ones, just to show off. Then, of course, it decided it needed to see some of [...]
