Tiny Nonsense

Done but not done

Right, so, I knit a hat. And you're only seeing it now, when the knitting part is already all done. And at least some of you are probably thinking 'my, that's a rather unassuming little hat, there's usually a bit more drama in these parts.' And you're right...but don't fret...because this hat isn't done. Remember these embroidered ornaments I did last year? Remember me saying at the time how I longed for them to be hat crowns? Well I remembered, and then I remembered that I was an adult, armed with lots of yarn and free will, and set out [...]

Help me decide…

I'm trying to decide if I should get us some icord machines to have as an optional add on for the next kit (which will be for string lights). I haven't shared much about this yet because it's not quite ready. But the pattern involves a fair bit of icord. I'll have options if you don't want to do it, but some of the super cool light stuff needs it. You can always do it manually! But it's faster with a machine. And once you have the machine, you tend to find other things to do with it! So I [...]

Robot helper

A new icord machine has come into my world, this one with a bigger opening, which means I am about to have the very prettiest charging cables you ever did see.* And I need to know, am I the only one sort of entranced by this? Because if I'm not, I sort of have a small scheme that is...manageable without an icord machine but even more fun with one that I kiiiiiind of want to talk about. Psst, if you want to watch me crank it, there's a video up on this patreon post over here (it's free, anyone can [...]

Tie one on

So when last we left the skirt, we had a waistband and we had the body of the skirt, and the goal was to join them together. The way I do that is by first trimming the top of the panels to make them nice and even, then running two lines of the longest, loosest stitches my machine will make all across the top of the skirt. Then I pull on them to gather the fabric to the width I want and carefully slide and adjust those gathers so that the seams on the panels line up with the sections [...]

Pocketses

So look I'll be honest. Making the pocket for this takes about as much time as making the skirt and waistband combined. It's not that it's hard, it's that it's three pieces, all of which are curvy, all of which have to fit together just right, and some of which require a bit of industrious ironing. I've made a couple of these skirts without the pocket. And it's absolutely faster and simpler to do it that way! But I also think 'god damn it, why didn't I put a pocket in this' every single time I wear those skirts. So [...]

Industrious

Sunday was for sewing, and I plowed through this in record time. I put these together with something sort of half way between a french seam and a felled seam. Do not yell at me, I'm not completely sure on the differences between the two, and I'm likely doing a slightly wrong version of both, but I love how it comes out. I even broke out the fancy super thick gold thread meant for denim for the top stitching. I'm using the selvedge at the bottom of the skirt both to show it off and so I don't have to [...]

Speedrunning a skirt

On Saturday afternoon, I decided, for reasons probably known to someone but certainly not to me, that I absolutely had to make a skirt over the long weekend. Step one was dragging out the suitable candidates from the fabric pile. Then narrowing them down (the light colored plaid is a lovely silk and linen that is better suited to warm weather, as is the floral, I'm considering lining the purple one and don't have the fabric for that yet). That left two contenders, both of which I absolutely want to have available to wear this fall and winter. But the [...]

Monthly Reminder

Hey folks, let's talk about jury nullification!* Jury nullification is when someone on a jury says 'yup, the defendant totally did what they're accused of, but holy fuck that's a shitty law, so I'm going to find them not guilty anyway.'** And then they keep saying not guilty as long as it takes. And then the defendant doesn't get punished for doing something that shouldn't be illegal in the first place. This comes in handy if, say, someone is in trouble for something like ending their own pregnancy or helping someone else end theirs (or for opposing the actions of [...]

Messy ends

Ok I know. I know that this looks like nothing so much as a pile of messy ends and poor choices. And that may well prove to be the case! But I think that if we tidy things up a bit and give it a bit of structure, we might well end up with something rather more presentable. And yes, it's the first draft, which means there are tweaks to come. But oh, oh i think it's close enough that it's worth doing, don't you?
